Set top box landscape and Google...

Set top boxes have been talked about for decades, the box thats sits on (or under) your tv where you do all of you shopping, watch your favourite shows, listen to your music and everything else under the sun.

Now while some people think this is quite far on the horizon (morons) its not. Have you got a 360, are you going to get a PS3? In similar fashion to the mobile communication/media player market the consumers vote with their wallets. The impending iPhone is testament to that. It will do everything, until the next version which will do more everything.

Whats my point? the point is that the home set top box market has no clear leader yet, simply because they are not all offering what is required. Microsoft have their market place and a very strong xbox live following, Sony's PS3 needs some serious work to catch up there.

Where do google come in? at the moment nowhere. They may have been building alliance with Sky, where they are going to incorporate many of their services straight into the box but that is not enough. Digital Tv s more a must in terms of purchase. And the TV landscape will change with time. Consumers buy consoles because theywant them and in this always online digital age they are becoming an ever more powerful tool.

The Goog should either partner with the PS3 and make its online functionality second to none. Or they should aquire SEGA and /or Nintendo and create their own console.

In years to come there will only need to be one box under the telly, and it will be mroe console than digital tv receiver.
